DHARAMSHALA, October 10: A group of three Tibetans have initiated a voluntary movement aimed at raising educational funds from within the Tibetan diaspora while simultaneously trying to engage the younger generation in the Tibetan freedom struggle.

After having met and introduced their movement, “A Drop of an Ocean” to Kalon Tripa Dr Lobsang Sangay, the three Tibetans; Tashi Topgyal (Shillong), Thupten Yeshi (Shillong) and Lodhen Nyima (Dholanji) announced their initiative at a press conference held earlier today in the Tibetan exile seat of Dharamshala.

The group plans to urge Tibetans everywhere to voluntarily abstain from eating dinner on the 15th of every month, as per the Tibetan calendar, and instead donate a sum of Rs 30 per month in lieu of the dinner towards a general fund.

“With the action of abstaining from one dinner every month, we can keep the Tibetan cause fresh in our minds while making a small financial contribution towards the education of our younger generation,” Tashi Topgyal told reporters.

"At present, we are receiving financial aid from western countries, however, it may cease at any time in the future. Therefore, at this critical moment, our united movement and involvement is indeed a need of the time," Topgyal added.

The group said that they will start their movement from Bodh Gaya during the up coming Kalachakra teachings and later visit all the Tibetan settlements in India to encourage Tibetans to take part in the movement.

For the purpose of bringing accountability and transparency in the handling of funds, the group has already approached the Home Department under the Central Tibetan Administration to oversee the fund’s transactions.

Speaking to Phayul, Kalon Gyari Dolma of the Home Department acknowledged the group’s “timely initiative” and said that her department will arrive at a decision shortly.
